ITCO WDT INTEL TCO WATCHDOG TIMER DRIVER
A hardware watchdog should be used to reboot the system in case of unrecoverable software errors. For example, this is common in the context of an high availability cluster. Unfortunately automatic probing of the right watchdog kernel module fails sometimes. My hardware seems to be a culprit. The watchdog doesn't fire also on Linux even it is probed and attached successfully.

Just tested but to no avail. Specifically, it probed and attached successfully, enabled once watchdogd was started, and never fired after the running watchdogd was killed by SIGKILL. Judging by the information previously existed some kind of demon for x64 platforms.
